Leaving Dillsburg and heading North….

Posted by on September 4, 2011

All packed up and ready to go

The dilemma of modern technology! On one hand it is so useful as it can bring you our journey via a blog as we travel across Amercia. On the other hand, when we don’t have it, we become extremely resourceful and look for other ways to have fun.

If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, we have been offline for 3 to 4 days when we ventured North of Dillsburg in Pennsylvania and travelled about 3 and a half hours to a lovely campsite in Lymon Run State Park. (This was our stopover on our way to Niagara Falls). Being without access to the internet meant that we totally relaxed, played games as a family and found other ways of keeping ourselves amused.

We spent three nights at this campsite. Why? You ask…..when we have so much ground to cover?

Because in our wisdom, we chose to leave on a long weekend in America and couldn’t find any other campsites to book into that were halfway between Dillsburg and Niagara Falls. But, to be honest, it was the best way to start our RV trip. It allowed Trev to relax (after negotiating traffic in the US in a big left hand drive RV) and allowed us some family time without the interruptions of iPods, laptops and iPads.

So we enjoyed walking, swimming, paddleboating, card games, pretending to be ninjas to fight off the Black Bears (which there are supposedly plenty of, but we failed to see any……….although Trev and some of the kids did see some bear poo!)

We bought marshmallows to toast on the fire (just to remind us of home), but I bet you guys in Australia have never seen a marshmallow this big!

As if one is not enough!

Out of all of our children, Kit was the only one who managed to burn his fingers. Why? Because (in his words) “I was trying to flick the fire off the marshmallow” After tears and an immersion of burnt fingers into a cup of water for 20 minutes, the practical lesson of “What to do when you burn yourself” began.  Aaaahhhh, life’s lessons teach more than any book ever will.

The next blog will cover our visit to Pennsylvania’s version of the Grand Canyon, then we’ll take you on a journey to Niagara Falls. Until then……………………

    Hi Cathy, Trevor and Kids
What a great time you are having. Love the photos. Many of our friends are following your blog. Perhaps you should put Kit in a harness!!!!!!!!

In answer to a previous question. We leave Perth on the 27th September.

      Hi Mum and Dad,
Well, we figure bad things happen in threes. First, Kit had his arm stuck in an elevator in the New York underground. Second, he fell off his bike in Dillsburg and I had to carry Akaisha whilst pushing him back in the pram, and now this… the third! Should be all sweet from now on 🙂
You guys must be getting excited about your trip too.
      Love Cath

Almost forgot… Kit … I hope your burn is much better. As I recall, that was my first conversation with you and your family as you were playing poker and you had your hand in the small cup of ice water. Even then, you were smiling.

      Hi Sandi,
You are absolutely right. Yes, Kit is a resilient little thing and even between the tears manages that gorgeous smile of his. 🙂
PS: Burn much better thank you. (From Kit)

    Hi All,
You all look great in what looks like beautiful weather. The photos are excellent, what an adventure. Love the motor home, cant imagine what Trevor was thinking/saying while trying to do a 10 point turn in it. Have you got a sign for it saying”it’s ok we’re from Australia” Have fun at Niagra Falls can’t wait to see those photos. Happy travels, Dylan and Lauryn say hi to everyone.

Hi Georgina, Stu, Dylan and Lauryn,
The weather has been wonderful….only a few cold wet days, and they are good for chilling and catching up on letters etc.
Trev was so busy trying to decide if he should go up the hills in the Motor Home (RV) that he wasn’t really saying too much. I was busy working out the best way to jump from the vehicle if we turned over! 🙂
We should have brought an Aussie flag with us and I can’t believe we didn’t. But it is amazing how many people have to ask where we’re from (British, English….but they only guess Australian when we tell them).
The first part of Niagara Falls blog is up and I’ll work on the other tomorrow. Thanks for following our travels. Say hi to Dylan and Lauryn from the kids as well.
Cheers Cath and Trev and kids
